One of the biggest constraints to tackling this is the chronic shortage of health workers – with 3.5 doctors per 10,000 people (vs. 30 in the UK), and 15 nurses and midwives per 10,000 people (vs. 90 in the UK). This is made worse by maldistribution, international migration, and poor health worker retention in rural areas. This project will rapidly expand training capacity through supporting 12 health training institutions in six Nigerian states to move from provisional to full accreditation – more than doubling their training capacity. It will do this through providing training equipment and supplies, infrastructure upgrades including waste management facilities, and other requirements for full accreditation.
