The Global Research Professorships programme funds research leaders, with a track-record of applied health research in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), to promote effective translation of research and to strengthen research leadership at the highest academic levels. Funding of up to £2m over up to 5 years is awarded to Professors working in close partnership with a research institution in an LMIC.. Global Research Professors are required to have existing strong collaborations or links with collaborators or partners in institutions in countries on the OECD DAC list and the award should plan to strengthen these/support training and capacity development/mentorship in these partners.Melioidosis is a grossly under-recognised tropical disease, caused by bacterium in the soil. Most people with melioidosis are poor and live in rural regions, typically working in rice farming. Ubon in Northeast Thailand is a world hotspot for melioidosis. More than half of melioidosis patients have diabetes, which is rising rapidly in low- and middle-income countries. This research will conduct the world’s first clinical trial of a new vaccine to prevent melioidosis, targeted for people with diabetes in Thailand and other tropical regions. The laboratory research carried out will identify which biomarkers to use to monitor how the vaccine works in Thailand, and study why people with diabetes are at a greater risk of infections compared to other people.. The aims of the research are: \n1. To evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of a vaccine for melioidosis in people with diabetes in\nOxford, UK, and compare immunogenicity with healthy non-diabetic subjects.\n2. Characterisation of the impact of diabetes and ageing on infection and vaccination.\n3. To define the key biomarkers (immune correlates of protection) for future monitoring of efficacy of the\nvaccine for melioidosis using an existing melioidosis patient cohort study.\n4. To undertake a community consultation activity to explore perceptions, understanding and key\nsensitivities amongst people living with diabetes in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand towards participation in\nfuture efficacy trials of a melioidosis vaccine.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-RP_2019_300808\nTitle: NIHR GRP: Stopping mothers dying From Sepsis in Africa\nDescription: The NIHR Global Research Professorship scheme is open to all professions and all Higher Education Institutions (HEI), based in England and the Devolved Administrations, to nominate health researchers and methodologists with an outstanding research record of clinical and applied health research and its effective translation for improved health. Global Research Professors are required to have existing strong collaborations or links with collaborators or partners in institutions in countries on the OECD DAC list and the award should plan to strengthen these/support training and capacity development/mentorship in these partners. Maternal sepsis is one of the most important causes of death and harm to mothers and their babies during or after pregnancy. It disproportionately impacts women and their families in low income countries. This research will improve our understanding of the epidemiology of maternal infection, optimise approaches to better prevent and diagnose maternal sepsis, and rigorously test at scale a facility level intervention aiming to improve maternal sepsis outcomes. The research will be focused in Malawi, and an important part of this programme will be working collaboratively with Malawian researchers to build maternal health research capacity.. This research aims to make major advances in the understanding of maternal infection in Malawi, and how to better prevent and manage these infections in order to reduce mortality and morbidity from maternal sepsis in Africa. The research programme workstreams are 1.) Understanding maternal infection in Malawi; 2.) Preventing infections; focussing on caesarean section and miscarriage surgery and 3.) Improving the management of maternal sepsis. Additionally, the research programme has two cross-cutting themes – 1) training and capacity building and 2) Communication with the public, practitioners, and policy makers. \n",
