The Global Research Professorships programme funds research leaders, with a track-record of applied health research in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), to promote effective translation of research and to strengthen research leadership at the highest academic levels. Funding of up to £2m over up to 5 years is awarded to Professors based in either an LMIC or the UK, working in close partnership with a research institution in an LMIC.. By the end of the award, NIHR Global Research Professors will be expected to: \n\n1) Have demonstrated research leadership at a national and/or international level.\n2) Have been developed and protected by their institutions, including being relieved of administrative tasks.\n3) Enhance existing and establish new research collaborations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).\n4) Have supported training and capacity strengthening/mentorship within LMIC and UK (if applicable) institutions that enhances research capacity for future global health and care research.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-RP_08_306394\nTitle: NIHR GHRP: Characterising the aetiology and host immunity to diarrhoeal infections in Africa.\nDescription: The NIHR Global Health Research Professorship (GHRP) scheme is open to all professions and all Higher Education Institutions (HEI), based in UK and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), to nominate health researchers and methodologists with an outstanding research record of clinical and applied health research and its effective translation for improved health. Global Research Professors are required to have existing strong collaborations or links with collaborators or partners in institutions in countries on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Development Assistance Committee (OECD) Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list and the award should plan to strengthen these/support training and capacity development/mentorship in these partners.\n\nI am a medical scientist with over 15 years of experience working in LMICs to understand and prevent diarrhoeal diseases.\n\nDiarrhoea remains a leading cause of death globally, particularly in children and older adults. In LMICs, rotavirus and Shigella are major causes of diarrhoea in children, but the causes in older adults are less understood. Limited diagnostic services in LMICs have led to the overuse of antibiotics, contributing to antibiotic resistance. \n\nVaccination is the single most important public health approach to reduce the burden of diarrhoeal diseases and the use of antibiotics. However, there are no licensed vaccines against Shigella, and those against rotavirus underperform in LMICs. In addition, we currently do not have an easy way to tell in experiments whether a potential vaccine against these diseases is likely to work. There is therefore a pressing need to better understand the biology of these diseases and to develop more effective vaccines against diarrhoea-causing bacteria and viruses.\n\nMy overall aim is to develop new vaccines that effectively manage and prevent sickness and death from diarrhoea. To do this we need to understand the causes of diarrhoea in all age groups and to better understand how the immune system responds to rotavirus and Shigella infection, as well as to potential vaccines. I will undertake a broad programme of research between 2025 and 2030, based at Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme in Malawi, consisting of three workstreams to respond to these needs over the next five years.\n. The overall aim is to develop new vaccines that effectively manage and prevent sickness and death from diarrhoea. To do this we need to understand the causes of diarrhoea in all age groups and to better understand how the immune system responds to rotavirus and Shigella infection, as well as to potential vaccines. \n\nI will undertake a broad programme of research, based at Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme in Malawi, consisting of three workstreams to respond to these needs over the next five years. The aims of the three workstreams are:\nWorkstream 1. Disease burden: to extend our diarrhoea surveillance to understand why some children are hospitalised despite vaccination, the causes of diarrhoea in adults and how well antibiotics works.\nWorkstream 2. Host response: to study how the immune system in adults responds to infection with rotavirus and Shigella to gain information for designing better vaccines and other preventive strategies; and to study blood samples donated by volunteers to understand how cells and antibodies interact to protect the body.\nWorkstream 3. Prevention: to investigate and continue to monitor the efficacy of the rotavirus vaccine that was introduced in Malawi. Use the knowledge gained from adult studies to know when children are protected from rotavirus and Shigella infection.\n",
