"description.narrative":["This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. UKVN funded the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to deliver a programme of seven projects that will advance vaccine development for diseases of epidemic potential for the benefit of people in LMICs. The projects cover a range of pathogens, which have been identified as being a priority area of investment due to lack of current vaccine availability and likelihood of epidemic threat. The projects are primarily focused on enabling activities, such as preclinical model or assay development, to support the development of vaccine candidates for priority pathogens, including through increasing the range of settings where vaccine development and evaluation can take place without a need for higher-containment facilities, which will support future work in LMICs. This project was not put out to an open, competitive tender process because UKHSA is an executive agency of DHSC with a mandate to deliver on pandemic preparedness and therefore exempt from the tender process as it is within DHSC’s body of expertise."],

This project was not put out to an open, competitive tender process because UKHSA is an executive agency of DHSC with a mandate to deliver on pandemic preparedness and therefore exempt from the tender process as it is within DHSC\\u2019s body of expertise.\", \"narrative.lang\": \" \"}"],

This project was not put out to an open, competitive tender process because UKHSA is an executive agency of DHSC with a mandate to deliver on pandemic preparedness and therefore exempt from the tender process as it is within DHSC’s body of expertise.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN)\nDescription: The UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid programme from the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). It supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. The long-term aims of this programme are to prevent outbreaks of diseases with epidemic potential through proactive vaccination campaigns or to control them through quick development of new vaccines and/or responsive vaccination campaigns upon outbreak detection. UKVN focuses on human and zoonotic diseases with epidemic potential in humans, from 12 priority pathogen families, alongside Disease X (a pandemic pathogen that has not yet been characterised).\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN-BACTIVAC\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) - BactiVac Network - Bacterial Vaccinology Competition\nDescription: This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. The BactiVac Network aims to accelerate the development of vaccines against bacterial infections to reduce antimicrobial use in humans and animals, specifically in LMICs. UKVN funding to BactiVac supports projects that develop vaccines to prevent and/or minimise the emergence and transmission of antimicrobial resistance. A partnership between at least two organisations is a funding requirement, with at least one partner based in the UK, and prioritising partnerships with LMIC researchers. The primary aim of the funding is to encourage the establishment of new, diverse research projects and partnerships which can progress to gain preliminary data and establish their reputation, enabling them to obtain further investment. Funding will also support other UKVN activities which promote collaboration across the membership, particularly for members based in LMICs.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN-BBSRC\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) - Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) - One Health Vaccinology Competition\nDescription: This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. UKVN identified that many pathogens of epidemic potential are zoonotic (having both human and animal hosts) and therefore require a One Health* approach. UKVN allocated investment to the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) to run an ODA-funded research competition to support ‘One Health Approaches to Accelerate Vaccine Development’. The funding supports projects that bring together veterinary and medical vaccinologists undertaking One Health research that promotes antigen discovery, enhances understanding of disease pathogenesis (the origination and development of disease), and accelerates vaccine development for a range of viral and bacterial families that are known to have a significant impact on animal and human health in LMICs. The ultimate aim of this research is to enable an effective and rapid response during future outbreaks of disease, particularly in LMIC populations. (*One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimise the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognises that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent.) This project was not put out to an open, competitive tender process because, as a non-departmental public body of the UK government, BBSRC is uniquely positioned to manage research calls.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN-CEPI\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) - Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) - Development of Vaccines Against Diseases with Epidemic Potential\nDescription: This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. CEPI (the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations) is a global public-private partnership established following the 2014-16 West African Ebola epidemic to accelerate development of, and equitable access to, vaccines against emerging infectious diseases of epidemic and pandemic potential. It pools funding from sovereign donors and major philanthropic organisations to: (1) Support the advancement of vaccine candidates for known priority pathogens in LMICs; (2) Advance vaccine platform technology to support accelerated responses to an unknown pathogen (Disease X); and (3) Address key barriers to vaccine access in LMICs, such as distribution of manufacturing capacity.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN-CVD-IUK\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) - Innovate UK - Clinical Vaccine Development Competition (2017-2021)\nDescription: This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. UKVN collaborated with Innovate UK to run a competition to fund research into the clinical development of vaccine candidates and vaccine platform technologies which tackle diseases of epidemic potential in LMICs and globally. The aim of this funding is to progress the development of vaccines for the 12 identified priority diseases, ultimately to support an effective and rapid response during future outbreaks of disease. The competition was open to all applicants able to demonstrate that their product or work has a realistic route to market, whether in the short or long term, and is primarily for the benefit of LMICs. The projects focused on Phase 1 clinical work, building on projects conducted in concurrently run UKVN competitions - the UKVN Preclinical Vaccine Development Competition 2017-2021, and the UKVN Innovate Vaccine Development Competition 2017-2020 - to ensure promising research is awarded follow on funding and can progress along the developmental pathway. This project was not put out to an open, competitive tender process because, as a non-departmental public body of the UK government, Innovate UK is uniquely positioned to manage research calls.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN-EFV-CCF\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) - National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) - Epidemiology for Vaccinology Competition\nDescription: This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. Alongside the need for Vaccine Products, there is also a need for the development of epidemiological models, and for tools and technologies to assist with the deployment and clinical trialling of vaccines in outbreak situations in LMICs. UKVN worked alongside the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)’s Central Commissioning Facility (CCF) to run a research competition to fund such research. The call was open to all eligible researchers that could demonstrate that their work was within the scope of the call and would positively support the welfare and economic development of LMICs. The funding supported projects seeking to develop epidemiological models, tools and technologies to assist with the deployment and clinical trialling of vaccines in outbreak situations in LMICs. The call was split into two parts: (1) Optimal Deployment of Vaccines in Outbreak Situations, to develop rigorous models for how priority diseases could spread in an outbreak setting; and (2) Development of other tools, technologies and methodologies to assist epidemiological work in outbreak settings.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN-FVMRH-EPSRC\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) - Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) - Future Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hub Competition 1 (2017-2021)\nDescription: This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. UKVN collaborated with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to run the Future Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hub competition. The competition was open to all eligible research organisations that could demonstrate that their work would contribute towards Vaccine Manufacturing Research specifically for the benefit of LMICs. This funding supports two hubs to: (1) Develop tools and technologies that allow for easier and quicker manufacturing of vaccines in emergencies; (2) Redesign existing vaccines to make them cheaper and easier to manufacture and easier to deliver in LMIC settings; and (3) Provide bespoke support for researchers developing vaccines for diseases with epidemic potential, so that the vaccines they are developing are as rapid and cost-effective to manufacture as possible. The projects are expected to collaborate with LMIC researchers and industry to support their work. This project was not put out to an open, competitive tender process because, as a non-departmental public body of the UK government, EPSRC is uniquely positioned to manage research calls.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN-FVMRH-EPSRC-2.0\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) - Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) - Future Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hubs Competition 2 (2023-2028)\nDescription: This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. UKVN is collaborating with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to run Stage 2 of the Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hubs competition, which funds four hubs (including the two funded in Stage 1). The first stage of the Future Vaccine Manufacturing Research Hubs competition prioritised the development of vaccine products through research into improved vaccine manufacturing. The second stage continues to fund work of the same nature. As in the first competition, the hubs seek to: (1) Develop tools and technologies that allow for easier and quicker manufacturing of vaccines in emergencies; (2) Redesign existing vaccines to make them cheaper and easier to manufacture and easier to deliver in LMIC settings; and (3) Provide bespoke support for researchers developing vaccines for diseases which primarily affect LMICs, so that the vaccines they are developing are as rapid and cost-effective to manufacture as possible. The projects are expected to collaborate with LMIC researchers and industry to support their work. This project was not put out to an open, competitive tender process because, as a non-departmental public body of the UK government, EPSRC is uniquely positioned to manage research calls.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN-MHRA\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) - Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) - Global Health Security\nDescription: This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. This project is a collaboration between UKVN, DHSC’s Global AMR Innovation Fund (GAMRIF) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The UKVN Work Package supports epidemic and pandemic preparedness by expanding the portfolio of research reagents for emerging viruses. Reagents are chemical compounds that trigger chemical reactions and are therefore vital to laboratory research and vaccine development. Simple and timely access to high quality research reagents would accelerate the development of vaccines against emerging infectious diseases, particularly for scientists from LMICs, which are frequently the worst affected. The existing Centre for AIDS Reagents (CFAR) repository at the MHRA has successfully provided a sustained research reagent resource to the scientific community since 1989. Using their existing network and successful operating model, UKVN funding allows CFAR to expand its scope to become the Centre for Infectious Disease Reagents (CIDR) and encourage leading laboratories to deposit state of the art research materials to their repository and produce and commission new reagents. These materials will be prioritised to organisations in LMICs which will benefit from free of charge access. For more information on the GAMRIF work package please see GB-GOV-10-GAMRIF-WP12-MHRA. This project was not put out to an open, competitive tender process because MHRA is an executive agency of DHSC and therefore exempt from the tender process as it is within DHSC’s body of expertise.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN-NETSCC\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) - Medical Research Council (MRC) and Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) - Intramural Centre Vaccine Development Projects\nDescription: This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. UKVN collaborated with the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) to run a competition in 2016 which aimed to support vaccine research to tackle UKVN-identified priority pathogens. UKVN funding covered six successful projects managed by the National Institute for Health and Care Research’s Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC). Five projects focus on Phase 1 trials, including two clinical human trials, and one on preclinical and discovery. Five priority pathogens (pathogens of epidemic potential in LMICs with no vaccine) were targeted across the projects, including Disease X (a pandemic pathogen that has not yet been characterised).\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN-ProgrammeCosts\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) - Programme Costs\nDescription: This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. Programme costs support the running of the programme through additional activity, such as events or Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) resources, for example an external evaluation of UKVN.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN-PVD-IUK\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) - Innovate UK - Preclinical Vaccine Development Competition (2017-2021)\nDescription: This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure. UKVN has identified a range of human diseases with epidemic potential in LMICs for which the development of vaccines is a priority. UKVN collaborated with Innovate UK to run a competition to support the preclinical development of candidate vaccines and vaccine platform technologies which aim to tackle diseases of epidemic potential in LMICs. The project was run across two phases, with successful projects in the first phase invited to apply for follow on funding. The competition was open to all organisations that were able to demonstrate that their product or work has a realistic route to market, whether in the short or long term, and where research was conducted primarily for the benefit of LMICs. Following the initial stage of funding, successful projects were invited to apply for follow on funding to support continued development of the vaccine products, including early-stage clinical work. This funding aimed to progress the development of vaccines for these priority diseases, ultimately to support an effective and rapid response during future outbreaks of disease. The programme builds on learnings from concurrently run UKVN-Innovate UK competitions - the UKVN Clinical Vaccine Development Competition 2018-2021, and the UKVN Innovate Vaccine Development Competition 2017-2020. This was done to ensure promising technology is awarded follow on funding and can progress further along the developmental pathway. This project was not put out to an open, competitive tender process because, as a non-departmental public body of the UK government, Innovate UK is uniquely positioned to manage research calls.\n \n ID: GB-GOV-10-UKVN-VD2.0-IUK\nTitle: UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) - Innovate UK - Vaccine Development for Diseases with Epidemic Potential Competition\nDescription: This is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UKaid project from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)’s UK Vaccine Network (UKVN) which supports the development of vaccines and vaccine technology for infectious diseases with the potential to cause an epidemic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on areas of market failure.
