      "description_narrative":["The project’s aim is to alleviate two key development\nproblems in Côte d’Ivoire: rural poverty, which\nafflicts more than half of the rural population; and\ndeforestation for economic development, which has\nled to the loss of 80% of the country’s natural forests.\nIt will contribute to efforts to reduce poverty and protect\nforests by developing tools that help policy-makers\npreserve and expand forests to the greatest benefits\nof rural communities, and to integrate relatively\nunproductive smallholders into more valuable\nglobal supply chains. Three tools have been\ncreated:\n• Land use inventory that classifies and differentiates\nphysical surface cover types.\n• Natural capital valuation framework that informs\nnational reforestation and forest protection\nstrategies, and supports the extension of\nsustainable supply chains. This will integrate\nthe land-use inventory with other economic\ninformation on the value of production and\neco-systems services to map the value of land\nunder different uses, recorded in a natural\ncapital accounting balance sheet.\n• Forest disturbance early warning system to tighten\nenforcement of land-use rules.\nThese will drive two key outcomes: improved\nmonitoring and enforcement efforts that prevent\nforest loss and prioritise afforestation; and better\ntargeted support to local economic development\nand sustainable supply chains through Payment\nfor Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes.\nAll three tools represent substantial improvements\nupon what is currently available, but the real benefit\nof the project lies in their combination and close\nintegration into policy and regulatory activity.       "title_narrative":["Collaborative network for adolescent nutrition and health in sub-Saharan Africa and India"],
      "description_narrative":["Our proposed project will focus on the nutrition and health of adolescent boys and girls. Adolescence is the stage of life, from 10 to 19 years of age, when children transition into adults. It is characterized by rapid growth, sexual maturation, widespread 're-wiring' and re-organisation of the brain, and an increase in the scope and complexity of social interactions. We currently have the largest generation of 10 to 19 year olds in human history, more than 1 billion worldwide, and half of these grow up in countries characterised by high levels of poor quality nutrition and rising rates of non-communicable disease (NCDs: obesity, heart disease and diabetes). In sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, adolescents form 20-35% of the population.  It has recently become clear that adolescence is a critical phase in life for achieving human potential, and during which the physical, psychological, behavioural, social and economic foundations of adult health are consolidated. The recent Lancet commission on adolescent health points out that investment in this stage of the lifecourse has the potential to produce a 'triple dividend' benefiting adolescents now, into their future adult life, and into the lives of their children. Half of the inequality in the value of lifetime earnings is due to factors determined before the end of adolescence. Despite its significance, adolescence has been largely neglected in health and social policy terms; a phenomenon recognised by the recent UN Global strategy for women's, children's and adolescents' health. Adolescent nutrition has, in particular, been under-researched, leading to large knowledge gaps. There have been no comprehensive studies of nutritional status and physical activity across different populations and settings. Little is known about how nutrition and physical activity change through adolescence, what determines these changes, and how they influence growth, current health, future disease risk, and the health of the next generation. We do not understand the drivers of dietary and activity behaviours among adolescents, and how these could be changed to benefit health. Our application brings together a multi-disciplinary network of researchers interested in adolescent health from the UK, India and different regions of sub-Saharan Africa, with the collective expertise to carry out large-scale nutrition research. Our long-term vision is to 1) conduct in-depth studies of the dietary behaviour, nutritional status, body composition and physical activity of adolescents in vulnerable populations in these countries, and how these change through adolescence; 2) to understand, through qualitative research, the factors which determine their diet and activity behaviour at each stage of adolescence; and 3) develop and test context-specific interventions to improve adolescent health through nutrition.  In preparation for this ambitious future work, the current pump-priming application is to 1) consolidate the new network by holding two workshops, one in India, one in Africa; 2) conduct training in qualitative research methods and carry out pilot qualitative data collection to explore influences on dietary and activity behaviour in adolescents across multiple settings; 3) carry out literature reviews of existing data on the nutritional status of adolescents and existing policies for adolescent nutrition in the countries represented; 4) carry out secondary analyses using data from existing cohorts within the group, to examine how nutrition in young adolescence relates to adolescent growth and adult NCD risk markers; and 5) work together to develop the design of the future project, and prepare a larger grant application in 2018.       "description_narrative":["In the last 15 years 260 million clinical cases of malaria have been prevented in Sub Saharan Africa, overwhelmingly through the use of insecticides that target the mosquito vector. Insecticide resistance is therefore a major threat to the sustained control of malaria. Whole genome sequencing of malaria mosquitoes has the power to revolutionise our understanding of the evolution of insecticide resistance; allowing us to design new insecticides and to develop strategies that delay the onset of resistance. However genomic technologies will only reach their full potential with improved sampling design and when extensive individual and population level metadata (collection location, infection/ disease state etc) accompany each sequenced sample. For the problem of insecticide resistance in the major malaria vector Anopheles gambiae a deep understanding of the biology lies with SSA scientists whilst the skills to sequence and analyse the data are held by centres in the North. This foundation proposal is designed to draw together these two groups with support from a world-leading spatial statistics group around the key issue of insecticide resistance evolution.       "description_narrative":["Earthquakes, storms, floods, and conflict cause untold damage to infrastructure, services, agriculture and livelihoods. The destruction of housing is often most visible, and the most devastating to the families, with often hundreds of thousands of homes destroyed. Householders themselves are invariably the first to respond; they are never passive, and signs of shelter recovery are very apparent from the first days after a disaster. The majority - as many as 80 or 90% - receive little or no assistance from the international community and are the main drivers of their own recovery process. This process has been termed 'self-recovery'. Previous GCRF awards supported interdisciplinary teams led by ODI in collaboration with CARE International UK, BGS, UCL and Loughborough University. They developed the understanding of the self-recovery process and advanced the theoretical basis for humanitarian assistance to the process of supporting self-recovery in practice. In large part as a result of this work, self-recovery is now a strategic element of the humanitarian shelter sector discourse with many disaster responses purporting to support this inevitable process. In recognition of the value of a people-centred approach that moves away from the convention product-based modalities, the CARE Philippines post-cyclone self-recovery project won the 2018 World Habitat Award in acknowledgment of its self-recovery focus. Sixteen thousand houses were built, each one unique and reflecting the priorities and means of each family. https://www.world-habitat.org/world-habitat-awards/winners-and-finalists/post-haiyan-self-recovery-housing-programme/ The self-recovery approach that respects the primacy of agency and choice aligns well with current humanitarian and development concerns such as the 'humanitarian development nexus', the Grand Bargain's emphasis on localisation, participation and cash-based responses, the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction, the Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Shelter Cluster strategy. This is further explained in the Business Case. However, very little has been done to develop guidance for practice. With the exception of the protocol 'Informing Choice for Better Shelter' that delivers a guide for the development of technical educational material, there are no published tools nor guidelines that provide an implementation framework for self-recovery in shelter projects. This project addresses this gap. CARE International has over 70 country offices across the world, all of them in ODA eligible  countries. All of the proposed activities will take place two hazard prone countries where there is a CARE presence and/or an activated coordination system in the form of a country level shelter cluster. The potential regions to be selected include South Pacific islands, East Africa, Central America, Philippines and SE Asia the precise locations to be dependent on ongoing and new disaster responses. In all instances the research team will be working with the Global Shelter Cluster, country level clusters and/or CARE International country teams. These will all be ODA eligible countries. The protocol developed will be adapted to become a preparedness tool for the specific ODA eligible country context.       "description_narrative":["Poor air quality damages the lives and livelihoods of millions of people and is predicted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to become the world's largest cause of preventable death by 2030. Those living in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) and cities are particularly affected, both through short-term acute effects and an accumulated life-long reduction in quality of life and health. There is a major opportunity to co-design and co-produce a highly fault-tolerant system for air pollution measurement, that is fully open-source, and built from easily available low cost and off-the-shelf components. The ambition is that this approach would be scale-able and could be sustained in LMICs by in-country practitioners at modest cost, long-term. New measurements can then be coupled to integrated assessment models developed by in-country agencies with our support to enhance their decision-making capacity on air pollution mitigation. This modelling will use a tool developed by project partners in the University. This new innovation for monitoring and modelling, can catalyse action and support long-term beneficial change, initially in our early adopter partner countries, and then applied to other LMICs.  Recent research from the University of York's Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL) has developed a low power, highly fault tolerant technology based on the clustering of multiple low-cost air pollution sensors to provide high quality measurements of target air pollutants. This approach exploits the simplicity, modest cost and high reliability of state-of-the-art sensors and electronics, but significantly improves the quality of data collected. The real-world use of sensor technologies has been slowed due to issues relating to poor individual sensor data quality. York have developed a technology that uses multiple sensors of the same type to solve the two key outstanding barriers to application in LMICs, that of sensor-to-sensor variability and unexpected sensor failure. The aim is to enable a self-supporting user community that can build and fix its own instruments and help improve on our initial designs. This approach differs fundamentally from the prevailing paradigm of a top-down commercial services model which has for many years failed to function in LMICs.  The Stockholm Environment Institute centre (SEI) in the Department of Environment and Geography at the University of York has been working with the Ministries of Environment in Togo and Cote d'Ivoire and the Ghana Environment Protection Agency, and the University of Lomé, Togo and Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Cote D'Ivoire to develop national models using LEAP-IBC (developed by SEI), to support national low-emission planning. We will build on this work applying LEAP-IBC to Lomé, Abidjan, Accra, and another Ghanaian city (e.g. Kumasi) where no such tool is available, and there is limited or no regular monitoring. This will allow them to develop emission inventories of key air pollutants, baseline and mitigation emission projections, and to estimate the resulting concentrations of PM2.5 and the associated human health impacts. We will work with local academics and planners to support the development of the analysis, guiding them through the data collection, model design, model validation and extraction of results. Working with the University of Colorado and WACL, we will further develop the GEOS-Chem Adjoint model inputs to LEAP-IBC that converts emissions in LEAP-IBC to concentrations of PM2.5 and ozone in these cities.
