      "description_narrative":["The dynamic nature of coastal zones renders conventional ground-based monitoring of Sargassum (seaweed) ineffective which hinders activity to deal with its negative environmental effects as it rots. Earth Observation and cloud-based processing services offer tools to track, quantify and understand seaweed beaching remotely. We will develop a cost-effective near-real time seaweed monitoring service for the Mexican Caribbean Sea coast. \n\nThe service will provide early warning of seaweed beaching and its assessment. This enables federal agencies to allocate resources to affected areas quickly and efficiently, thereby minimising economic, social and environmental impacts and enhancing the resilience of local communities. ","Beaching of sargassum (brown macroalgae) causes large-scale economic, environmental and ecological problems along the Caribbean coast. Mexico, where half the national income arises from tourism along this coastline (>US$ 11.5 billion in 2018), has been severely affected. \nPredicting the arrival and managing the impact of sargassum is a priority for the Mexican government. Limited understanding of sargassum beaching and how it is controlled by changing sea conditions due to climate warming means that government resources are being spent inefficiently. \nThe dynamic nature of coastal zones and often sudden arrival of sargassum, render conventional ground-based monitoring ineffective. Earth Observation and cloud-based processing services offer tools to track, quantify and understand sargassum beaching remotely. We will develop and deploy a comprehensive near-real time sargassum monitoring service for the Mexican Caribbean Sea coast, demonstrating that large area, routine monitoring of sargassum can be cost effective. A key innovation is the combination of Planet data, specifically their new SuperDove systems (giving additional wavebands suitable for tracing the whole sargassum life cycle at daily intervals at 1-3m spatial resolutions) with freely available EU Copernicus data. \nThe service will allow for early warning of sargassum beaching and its assessment. This will enable federal agencies to allocate appropriate resources to affected areas quickly and efficiently, thereby minimising economic, social and environmental impacts and enhancing the resilience of local communities. Additionally, commercial opportunities could be developed for similar types of environmental monitoring in the broader Caribbean and beyond."],
