Smoke from landscape fires is a severe environmental health issue in parts of southeast Asia.. The smoke impacts are most keenly felt during dry spells in Indonesia, which hosts more than 80% of SE Asia's tropical peatlands. Over the last 50 years, deforestation and the construction of drainage canals, has increased the flammability of large areas of Indonesia's tropical peatland, during dry spells the peat can dry sufficiently to be ignitable by surface vegetation burning. The resulting fires can propagate downward into the peat and laterally, generating large areas of burning with fuel consumptions per unit area 100 times higher than other landscape fires. This releases copious amounts of particulate matter (PM) which adversely affects human health because the particles are small enough to pass into the human respiratory system causing respiratory and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality This project teams researchers in the UK from STFC and KCL with universities ITB and BMKG to address this problem using satellite observations. In Indonesia BMKG has the remit within Indonesian to provide air quality information. However, this is based on a limited number of in situ monitoring stations across the nation, and no operational use of satellite aerosol data to complement and extend in situ coverage. Furthermore, air quality (AQ) forecast models need to be driven by accurate emissions magnitudes and timings. Unlike emissions from urban sources, those from peat burning cannot be prescribed from inventories, but must rather be based on real-time satellite observations since these fires are highly variable over space and time. Thus a reliable and timely source of fire and emissions data need to be provided, and if this is done then accurate forecasts of air pollution episodes should be possible using via an atmospheric chemical transport model (CTM) fed with these data. Such AQ forecasts alert authorities to take action (e.g. cancel outdoor activities, close schools, distribute personal protection masks). Satellite-based approaches to estimate fuel consumption are available and mature. However, emissions factors have so far been based on laboratory combustion of just a few samples of tropical peat exhibiting significant variability. Furthermore, aerosol optical properties used in satellite retrievals of AOD (Aerosol Optical Depth) are based on measurements made in South American forests. Neither the emission factors nor the smoke optical properties will be fully representative of Indonesian 'wildfires', and especially not the extreme combustion conditions exist during El Nino periods - such as for example intense flaming forest fires atop large areas of burning peat. Only in situ sampling of smoke from representative wildfires can deliver emissions factors and aerosol optical properties representative of such conditions. This project has five main objectives focused on achieving a step change in the quality of AQ measurements, monitoring and forecasts over Indonesia and importantly to develop the capacity for joint Indonesian and UK research in the area through joint field campaigns and visiting scientists. The first objectives focus on obtaining a unique set of ground measurements bespoke to Indonesian scrubland, forest, peat and agricultural residue fires. The subsequent objectives will capitalize on these new pieces of information to produce new satellite aerosol optical depth (and atmospheric particulate matter) information and fire radiative power-based fire emissions products capable of being used in Indonesia in real-time to support AQ assessments and model forecasts, and finally we will assess the quality of the full set of information produced - and in particular the atmospheric PM distributions.","The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) supports cutting-edge research to address challenges faced by developing countries. The micro-ramp is a recently developed novel passive flow control device that is a part of the micro-vortex generator (MVG) family. Although MVGs have shown potential in minimising the adverse effects of SWTBLI to a certain extent, previous studies indicate great scope for further improvement. In this investigation, the use of micro-ramps (passive flow control) will be paired with jet blowing (an active flow control mechanism). SWTBLI involves complex physics and is challenging for investigation using experimental techniques and numerical simulations. In this project, we propose to study hybrid MVG's as the flow control device experimentally using the hypersonic wind tunnel facility at the University of Manchester, and numerically using large eddy simulation (LES) by STFC to obtain a better understanding of the flow physics. COMET is designed to investigate charged lepton flavour violation (CLFV) by searching for the as-yet-unseen muon to electron conversion on an aluminium nucleus. This process is not allowed in the Standard Model of particle physics, but has very good sensitivity to Beyond the Standard Model physics. A positive discovery of CLFV would be a Nobel Prize-class result and revolutionise our understanding of the building blocks of the universe. The experiment is currently under construction at the internationally-renowned Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) laboratory. The first phase of the COMET experiment will begin taking data in 2019. This phase is designed to probe this process 100 times better than the current limit, with a second phase reaching a sensitivity that is 10,000 times better. To achieve this sensitivity, we are building the world's most intense muon beam which will deliver over a billion muons per second. Very few of these muons will result in anything that is relevant to muon to electron conversion, and instead will form the unwanted background to our sought-after CLFV signal. Therefore COMET (a search for a miniscule \"signal\" in the midst of a billion billion mundane \"background\" occurrences) presents a huge technical challenge which will be met by the use of a combination of modern technologies: these include cutting-edge applications of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs; programmable integrated circuits which allow real-time data algorithms to be implemented) and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) as accelerative computing components, supercomputing via a cloud-based computing solutions, and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. Whilst these will be employed to allow COMET to pursue its particle-physics goals, these are technologies that are known to offer novel solutions to common problems in a growing number of global DA industries, from communications and networking to financial applications and blockchain research. COMET's first data-taking runs are scheduled for 2019, in the second year of the project. Over a hundred physicists from 35 institutions in 14 countries currently participate, and top scientists from Malaysia will work with researchers from Imperial on the preparations for the experiment, real data-taking and the physics analysis of the data. The Imperial group designed the software that is being used by COMET and participants will take part in the global collaborative coding effort, and the production of massive amounts of computer simulations that are needed to allow us to study the data, and work with experts in FPGA and GPU programming to produce and test the hardware and software that is needed by the experiment. The project includes attachments in the UK and Malaysia to allow the exchange of skills, as well as extended time at the J-PARC laboratory to build and run the experiment together with our international colleagues. The project will result in participants taking on valuable roles within the experiment, being trained in modern DA techniques and applying them to this world-leading experiment.
