      "description_narrative":["As a consequence of population growth and urbanisation, our exposure to the seismic hazard is increasing, with the greatest risk arising from substandard constructions. Substandard reinforced concrete (RC) structures account for a large proportion of the existing building stock in urban and suburban regions of Turkey. Such structures are known to be highly vulnerable and have experienced catastrophic damage during past earthquakes (Kocaeli 1999, Duzce 1999, and Van 2011) leading to inexcusably extensive human, economic and societal losses given that the Turkish Seismic Design Code (1997) was revised in 2007 to introduce more stringent requirements for seismic design and mitigate vulnerability. However, the benefits of modern codes and more stringent code enforcement and inspection during design and construction will only benefit society in the future, whilst the current stock remains highly vulnerable.       "title_narrative":["Developing a novel Climate change Risk Assessment Framework for cultural heritage in Turkey (CRAFT)"],
      "description_narrative":["Turkey is one of the most archaeologically and culturally rich places in the World with 18 UNESCO World Heritage sites, and an additional 78 locations in the tentative list. Flooding and landslides are one of the most destructive types of natural disaster in Turkey. Flood impacts in Turkey are felt severely in major cities of the country. Istanbul (the largest city of Turkey with 15 million inhabitants) and its UNESCO World Heritage historical areas have recently suffered from frequent floods as a result of intense rainfalls under a changing climate. The severe floods of August-September 2009 in the Marmara region of Turkey were categorised as an event greater than the 500-year return period. These floods caused 31 human losses, affected 35,000 people, and led to significant damages in major urban cities, particularly in Istanbul, with an economic loss more than $100 million.  Many parts of the old city centre (Historic Peninsula) of Istanbul were flooded. The Historic peninsula had also suffered from several major floods in December 2010, July 2017, February 2018 and August 2019. Heavy rains cause flooding events more frequently in recent years than in the past. The deadly 2019 floods, rainfall-triggered landslides, and the subsequent moisture problems have resulted in significant structural damages to cultural heritage; in particular Small HagiaSofia and Ahi Çelebi Mosque (which was at that time in a restoration process). Our proposed research will involve susceptibility mapping of cultural heritage to climate-change driven hazards, with a particular focus on the floods and landslides hazards on Istanbul's world heritage sites. The mapping, based on a risk assessment framework, will then be used to develop a response policy. In developing risk assessment frameworks, it is the normal presumption that \"heritage assets are irreplaceable and that heritage is a 'non-renewable resource' \". However, the risk assessment framework to be developed within this project will need to recognise the inevitability and potential of loss. We will recognise the inevitability of loss, where the impacts of climate and environmental change may lead to the conclusion that conservation and perpetuation of some monuments are unsustainable. The potential of loss could imply that, where monuments have been damaged by landslides and floods, in addition to the option of reconstructing the heritage to its pre-disaster condition, we should consider a new form of the heritage, where the history of disaster is reflected in the modified monument.","Research and development activity contributing to the UK’s strategy to address key development challenges."],

      "title_narrative":["5G: Fusing the Istanbul theatre and games sectors for a more sustainable, productive and connected future"],
      "description_narrative":["5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology that enables high speed and high quality mass connectivity in multi media digital communication. It has a wide range of potential applications, not least in the cultural and creative industries. This project brings together the strengths of technological and creative development in the UK and Turkey: Turkey has a fantastic 5G roll out programme, and the UK is leading in the area of innovative immersive creative performance, predicted to be a major application of 5G. Seeking to connect the arts and creative industries with universities and digital technology sector, the 5G:XR project will stimulate new local 'fused' (creative + digital) networks in Istanbul and Brighton and new academic + industry partnerships between the two cities and countries.  The project will demonstrate the potential value of research institutions bringing together the established cultural sector (in this case, performing arts) and contemporary creative digital industry (in this case, games) to explore the adoption and applications of new technologies; specifically 5G and the creation of new forms of digital culture. This is a prime opportunity for knowledge exchange, utilizing the UK's immersive performance expertise combined with theoretically anchored media research, to ensure that it can have a transformative impact on prosperity, social cohesion and sustainable growth along with the rest of the 5G roll out in Istanbul. Istanbul as a region has great potential to be fused but has not engaged the creative industries in their 5G development. Creative Industries provide a great platform to engage and translate the potential for new technology to wide audiences and with its rich performing arts ecosystem Istanbul is the perfect place to enhance and take learning from and add value to the work we have done in Brighton to achieve creative experiences, which will generate prosperity to that sector in Turkey, using the potentials of 5G.  Digital media and cultural industries researchers will work together with a performing arts collective, industry partners and 5G testbed venues to explore the impact of 5G on the way arts and culture is made and shared, locally and internationally, face-to-face and virtually. We will also seek to explore opportunities for two creative sectors - performing arts and the games industry to collaborate and innovate through cross fertilisation, centred around 5G technology, and engage with the question of what artists and practitioners from the performing arts and games sector bring to the critical understanding and practical application of 5G.  In addition to the creative implications, we will look at the potential strategic and business opportunities that 5G affords for these creative industries in reaching new audiences (face-to-face and virtually), establishing new income and activity streams (diversifying content, and modes of delivery), or addressing wider social challenges (difficulties of access) and environmental concerns (carbon-heavy transportation of talent and audiences).       "description_narrative":["Throughout history, Istanbul has been a city where different communities have coexisted, and many languages, religions, and cultures have interacted with and influenced one another. Despite changes over time, the city is still home to a culture where, within craftsmanship, textiles are used in a variety of forms. The breadth of colour and thread types, designs, and motifs used in textile practice has transformed worldwide into a means of expression through which the stories of a particular culture are passed down from generation to generation. Quilting, carpet weaving, cloth stamping, embroidery, and point lace are just some of Turkey's many textile crafts. Passed down from master to apprentice, the various trades associated with these crafts are now slowly giving way to technology. In a project to be carried out by RCA and Istanbul Modern Museum, a network of scholars, artists, and craftspeople from Turkey and the United Kingdom will coalesce to move textiles, as used throughout crafts and art, closer to contemporary technology by creating avant-garde technology and design products. The project is aimed at academics, textile artists, designers and artisans based in Istanbul. Notably, we seek to reach the craftspeople working in the fields of traditional textile craft and art, and young communities of textile art and research, to focus on knowledge transfer and best practice. Hence, universities, arts institutions, craft guilds and associations will be linked through a series of workshops and panel discussions, with the project findings disseminated at a final symposium in Istanbul Modern. The proposed activities will support the economic development of the textile craft sector in Turkey, contributing to Istanbul's 2014-2020 Regional Plan targets by (i) introducing new textile-making skills (ii) gathering local and international qualified creative labour to Istanbul through the symposiums (iii) sharing textile research and development activities with young artists and designers and craftspeople to assist in increasing turnovers in their businesses. From the notion of bringing textile thinking in interdisciplinary practices, we will use this network as a platform to engage with a broader community and test our idea of joint research to launch long-term initiatives. Looking beyond the current state of the art, we will facilitate the sharing of experiences and expertise across different disciplines, which also includes material innovation, AI and technology start-ups. With a strong emphasis on the policy of future craft, we will explore strategies as to how these relationships might be framed to support new talents. By aspiring to make art easily accessible by the masses, and to initiate a conversation at the intersection of craft and technology, Istanbul Modern would be an excellent host to seed this hybrid design framework. Through this series of events, we aim to mutually transfer and share the experience of research and industrial relations to support the local artisans, artists and early career researchers working with textiles to reach a wider audience and discover new elements in crafted textiles. The outcomes of the proposed activities would promote the economic development and welfare of Turkey by (i) suggesting possible pathways and bringing new skills to increase the value of textile craft and goods by technology embodiment (ii) exampling successful models and knowledge transfer to reach the creative labour's full potential and meet international and national demands (iii) promoting interdisciplinary research in traditional craft to enter new sectors, which in turn will increase the export (iv) developing new infrastructure and free programmes in Istanbul Modern encouraging technology adaptation in art and design (v) initiating a dialogue for creation of local policy frameworks and discussing necessary policy measures based on successful models in the UK.","The Newton Fund builds research and innovation partnerships with developing countries across the world to promote the economic development and social welfare of the partner countries."],
