      "description_narrative":["A large amount of money goes into funding education, especially literacy, with the belief that there will be long-term, positive effects. However, literacy rates - especially in Sub-Saharan Africa - remain incredibly low. Very few of the hundreds of rigorously evaluated interventions show more than moderate gains in student learning; almost none provide longitudinal evidence on longer-term outcomes. In short, there is little evidence from longitudinal studies in Africa about the effects of early learning on later school or life outcomes, and whether a strong early foundation better supports transitions, paving the way for continuing education, life-long learning and post-primary success.       "description_narrative":["The Cities & Infrastructure Programme funds interdisciplinary research projects that address the challenge of creating and maintaining sustainable and resilient cities, with the aim of informing relevant policies and interventions in developing countries. The programme is run by the British Academy on behalf of all the National Academies, as part of the Global Challenges Research Fund.","Projects must demonstrate an innovative and interdisciplinary approach (two or more disciplines), yielding new conceptual understanding on one or more of the following four sub-themes:\n\na) Planning: In the context of the large, dispersed and unplanned cities of the global south, planning for resilience becomes a matter of collaborative initiative involving a host of actors and sentient infrastructures. This requires mobilising plural and interdisciplinary knowledges, both for understanding and for acting in intelligent ways. \n\nb) People: Human vulnerability and resilience go hand in hand. The poor are deprived in plural ways, but also forced to become resilient subjects, making use of the city and their know-how in imaginative ways.\n\nc) Infrastructure: Cities are held together by infrastructures, which also instantiate and regulate social life in quite strong ways. In the global south the infrastructures are broken, incomplete, badly regulated, underfunded and often reliant on vernacular improvisations. Technical solutions alone will go only so far, and are expensive.\n\nd) Habitat: The urban habitat is central to resilience, in the form of lived experience, the consequences of emissions and heating, the formation of symbolic and public culture, the consequences of urban architecture and design. This is an obvious terrain for interdisciplinary work on jointly making sense of how habitats can be managed as a silent form of 'atmospheric' regulation."],

The intensity and length of the dry seasons as\nwell as the timing and intensity of the rainy seasons\nare becoming more and more unpredictable.\nAlthough improvements in weather forecasting are\nbeing made, the situation in Uganda is that reliable\nand actionable weather and crop data are still often\nnot available and of varying quality, contributing\nto underperforming agricultural production and\nfood insecurity. Whilst in the coming years capacity\nbuilding to achieve a truly sustainable solution will\ncontinue, DFMS will provide Uganda’s decisionmakers\naccess to reliable and actionable information\nnow.\nDFMS is a suite of information products that enables\nits Users to take better-informed water, environmental,\nand agricultural management decisions and,\namongst others, mitigate the impacts of drought and\nfloods. Access to DFMS only requires an Internetconnected\ndevice. Information is provided as maps\nor in graphs and tables, and several analysis tools\nallow for bespoke data processing and visualisation.\nAlarms can be tailored to indicate when parameters\nexceed user-defined thresholds.\nCreating DFMS required the development of a\n(software) platform to process data and visualise\nthe resulting information; environmental data going\ninto the platform and algorithms for processing;\nand a computing infrastructure (servers) to host the\nplatform and provide the service. The DFMS Platform\nis built using Open Source software, including Open\nData Cube technology for storing and analysing\nEarth Observation data. It extensively uses (free)\nsatellite remote sensing data, but also takes in data\ngathered in situ. By making the platform scalable\nand replicable, DFMS can be extended to contain\nadditional Products or be rolled out in other countries\nin the region and beyond.","This project aims to provide accurate flood and drought predictions to farmers in Uganda so that they are able to use that information to adjust their farming and livestock activities, with the ultimate impact of reducing the losses they would otherwise suffer from flood and drought impacts. This project aims to tackle the issue of MSHT by developing a stakeholder-informed data-driven Earth Observation (EO) approach to support anti-MSHT efforts in Uganda. As an UN Alliance 8.7 Pathfinder Country, the Uganda Government is committed to meeting SDG Target 8.7 and ending MSHT. However, there is a major data deficit in reliable prevalence and vulnerability mapping and estimation of MSHT and associated indicators, particularly within country. This data deficit limits our understanding of the complex issues surrounding MSHT and restricted present anti-MSHT activities and risk management in Uganda. This project's proposed space-based solution is the development of a Modern Antitraffickingslavery Support System (MASS). MASS comprises four principal processing nodes that require input from satellite EO data and each providing output products that will be either ingested into another node or be for the end-user to use for informed anti-MSHT decision-making and response.
