      "description_narrative":["Climate change is the defining issue of our time. from shifting weather patterns that threaten food production, to rising sea levels that increase the risk of catastrophic flooding, the impact of climate change is global in scope and unprecedented in scale.\n\nWe must move rapidly to ensure that a greater proportion of our energy is generated from renewable sources. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the required Energy Transition will predominantly be achieved through Independent Power Producers (IPPs) who secure their funding from Global Capital markets.\n\nWhilst the mitigation of climate change is urgent and essential, it is also vital that we see a fair transition to a new energy infrastructure, a transition is therefore needed which does not leave behind poor and disadvantaged communities.\n\nIn South Africa, the generation of renewable energy has been encouraged through the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Programme (REIPPP). This programme requires IPPs to allocate 2.5% of their total funding to socio-economic projects.\n\nThis project seeks to test the feasibility of charging a bank of small batteries from solar farms installed by IPPs, then utilising those batteries to provide power to low income/rural households and micro businesses. It is envisaged that the power would be provided free of charge as part of the IPPs social commitment. The feasibility project will specifically address the viability of delivering this project in Kwa Zulu-Natal, focusing on a cluster of five off grid villages around the town of Cato Ridge. We will also test the model through discussions with a number of IPPs, working in South Africa.\n\nThe operational model we wish to test is for a social enterprise to manage the distribution of the batteries to households within a prescribed programme. It is envisaged that the batteries would be replaced on a weekly basis.       "description_narrative":["Sunstore Technologies Ltd has invented and patented a new solar hybrid cooking and electricity generation unit; the Sunstorepowerpan XLM.\n\nThe unit is designed to cook all food types, and can produce up to 2000 portions of rice (or equivalent) in any 24 hour period, using either a 30 or 60 litre cooking pan. It comes with an insulated solar pre-heat serving counter that can keep the food piping hot for up to 8 hours, so it is possible to serve a hot breakfast to around 500 people as well as produce 100 portions every hour. This makes it ideal for situations where large volumes are required eg community feeding stations, emergency relief set-ups or refugee camps, as well as schools where meals are often served to incentivise attendance.\n\nThe unit can simultaneously generate up to 200 Watts of electricity to charge eg phones or computers during the day, or to provide illumination at night. This is done by burning smokeless bio-char in an enclosed and protected fire tray. 200Watts is significantly more electricity than is produced by the equivalent photo-voltaic panel array at less than half the capital cost.\n\nBy means of a water tower, the unit can solar track, allowing it to be left unattended for several hours at a time. This water tower can also filter over 300 litres per day to provide safe drinking water.\n\nThe unit is attempting to improve the quality of life for the 3.5 billion people currently reliant on biomass for their daily cooking needs, while reducing air pollution, deforestation and the associated species loss. It can provide electricity to the 1.2 billion currently off-grid.       "description_narrative":["In South Africa, energy generation is regularly too low to meet demand. Eskom, the national energy company, performs scheduled Load Shedding; sections of the grid are powered off, so that limited generation can supply demand. There are widespread deployments of local backup generation and battery storage at commercial premises such as offices and hotels so that they can cope with load shedding, but socially disadvantaged people do not have such resources.\n\nEskom supplies municipalities, who then distribute and sell the energy to energy consumers. On average, 27% of municipal revenue is derived from selling energy. Changes to Eskom tariffs, with higher price periods, cause municipalities financial challenges. For example, Hessequa are losing 3Million rand per month.\n\nThis project will provide demand side control to municipalities. In its simplest form this involves temporarily turning-down electrical demands such as air-conditioning or water pumps, at times of high price. This will be controlled by Gridimp's innovative iDSR (Intelligent Demand Side Response) technology which uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to reduce maintenance and configuration costs.\n\nThe installation involves an engineer installing the control appliance on-site and connecting it to local sensors using our engineering console. This project will create new software to integrate with IoT sensors, plus a new interface to the microgrid controller to enable control or charging/discharging of batteries.\n\nGridimp will be the lead UK partner and provider of demand control technology. GreenSun will be the South African partner, leading the installation work. The project demonstration customer will be Hessequa Municipality. Hessequa Municipality have provided their support to this project, are recognised as a green leader amongst municipalities in South Africa and are committed to helping us to create a model for other municipalities to follow.\n\nThe main impacts of the project will be:\n\nUse demand response at scale to avoid load shedding, supporting greater reliability -- key to multiple UN objectives (including GESI)\nAvoid excessive charges to municipalities & direct Eskom customers. Research into improving representation of Climate Variability and change over Africa by using Machine Learning as a tool for Data Rescue.","The observational record of weather and climate is severely limited – there are many times and places where we have few or no observations, and these limitations restrict both science and predictions, particularly for extreme, high-impact events. This restriction is particularly severe over Africa.    The aim of this project is to improve the observational record by taking archived observations – currently only on paper – and making them available to science by converting them into computer-readable form. Doing this by hand is unacceptably slow and expensive, but recent developments in Machine Learning offer the potential of a fast, automatic data rescue process.    This project should combine state-of-the-art Machine Learning methods, and pre-existing work on data rescue, to produce a recommended method for automatic observation transcription. The work should apply that method to some undigitized records from South Africa, Africa or the surrounding oceans, to demonstrate its effectiveness and scalability. The work should also elaborate how the method can be shared and used more widely.   Where appropriate, research should be done in collaboration with WCSSP South Africa partners and help explore opportunities to build capacity in use of the method. "],

Research into advancing rip current forecasts for beach locations across South Africa.","Rip currents are one of the biggest dangers facing beach users in South Africa. To safeguard members of the public and prepare emergency services, a collaborative project by the University of Plymouth and SAWS developed forecasting tools for rip current hazards in South Africa. The one-year project, funded by WCSSP South Africa in FY20-21, engaged the National Sea Rescue Institute, City of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, and Lifesaving South Africa, bringing together sea rescue incident records, wind, wave, and water level forecasts as well as the results of field experiments. Despite challenges from the pandemic, a pilot operational rip risk hazard forecast for the Cape Peninsula coastline was developed and successfully trialled in June 2021 to warn the public of the risk of rip currents. Building on the success of the initial trial service, expansion to an operational service with greater coverage of South African beaches is deemed both desirable and important. There is particularly a need to extend forecasts beyond Cape Town for other dangerous locations across South Africa. This project would build on the previous project, helping to strengthen capacity at SAWS and advance the application of rip current forecasts. Over the course of the three-year project (pending funding extensions for years 2 and 3), the aim is to establish a long-term sustainable service that contributes a measurable (and evidenced) improvement in rip current incident prevention at multiple locations, to enhance beach safety.  The work aligns with the WCSSP South Africa Science Plan, which identifies the marine sector as one of four priority sectors. It also responds to the desire of SAWS (a core partner in WCSSP South Africa) to expand and update the current code and further explore coastal hazard services at SAWS.  "],
