Selected researchers benefit from focussed short term training and long term support through access to expert mentors and international networks.","The primary objective of the Leaders in Innovation Fellowships (LIF) programme is to build the capacity of researchers for entrepreneurship and commercialisation of their research. The programme is aimed primarily at researchers within the partner country who are in the process of developing a business proposition for their innovation. All business ideas are assessed based upon their potential for social and economic development impact. A select cohort of researchers from that country will benefit from focussed support including a focussed period of training in the UK in aspects of commercialisation and technology entrepreneurship and access to expert mentors from the UK. In the short term they will develop a commercialisation plan for their innovation. In the long term they will benefit from on-going support at their home institution, and access to an international network of peer innovators and mentors, in taking their commercialisation plan forward. The programme has the following primary aims: (i) To build the capacity for innovation and technology entrepreneurship in the partner country, to support its long-term social welfare and economic development;\n(ii) To establish international networks of innovators and technology entrepreneurs centred around The Academy’s Enterprise Hub."],

More broadly, it is clear that engineers, through advances in technology, have a major role to play in addressing key global challenges, such as sustainability, clean energy, food security, and climate change resilience. The Industry Academia Partnership Programme aims to build strong and structured partnerships between higher education institutions and locally based industry, focussed around bilateral academic and industry exchanges.       "description_narrative":["The long-term goal of this project is to build upon STFC-funded innovations in astronomy to help tackle challenges to developing countries identified in the Global Challenge Theme Areas, \"Sustainable Resources\" and \"Sustainable Growth\". Over the last 18 months we have demonstrated that software developed by astronomers to detect emission and identify objects in thermal (mid-infrared, wavelength ~10 micron) wavelength astronomical images is extremely well suited to identifying and characterising animals in aerial thermal video footage. Last year we were awarded  STFC 21st Century Challenge pump priming funds to support a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) for 9 months to develop the automated source-finding and identification software pipeline we created to work in different ecosystems. We have subsequently published a pilot paper based on this work. The press release associated with the paper was picked up by media outlets word-wide. As a result, we have received requests from many conservation organisations in developing countries asking to use our drone + software pipeline system. Having demonstrated that this has the potential to be a cost-effective and efficient way to monitor and help manage animal populations over large areas, we now request funding to (i) help the stakeholders who have contacted us, (ii) thereby demonstrate this approach can tackle some of the major challenges facing developing countries, such as food security, animal health and ecosystem monitoring/protection/conservation, and (iii) begin systematically tackling these challenges in developing countries around the world.","The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) supports cutting-edge research to address challenges faced by developing countries.       "description_narrative":["Conventional and commercially available Radiation Therapy (RT) treatment systems utilise S-band linac technologies coupled to magnetron or klystron RF power sources, which invariably entails incorporation of the linac structure inside the rotating gantry for circumferential patient treatment. The theme of this activity is to assess a variety of different linac and RF source configuration options, taking advantage of recent technology developments in frequency ranges outside of the conventional provision.
