      "description_narrative":["This is a proposal for the training of graduate students and scientific staff of A. Alikhanyan National Science Laboratory (ANSL), Armenia in the operation of cyclotrons for science, applications, isotope production, and medical physics.  Armenia is a nuclear-energy country and its strategic location makes radiation monitoring important. There are also significant mining interests. The Republic of Armenia has invested in the purchase and installation of an 18-MeV cyclotron from IBA-Belgium. The international advisory body of the institute recommended that Armenia implement a research programme in low-energy nuclear science along with a cyclotron that can produce isotopes for nuclear medicine. The cyclotron is fully constructed as well as the building that houses it. The missing component is the experience and skill set of the graduate students and staff in the use and operation of the facility. This is needed to secure approval for running the machine. This proposal will engage students from ANSL and the three universities in Yerevan (the capital of Armenia) in strong in STEM subjects, namely, the Yerevan State University, the Yerevan Polytechnic University, and the Russian University of Armenia.  Associated with this request for training and education in the safe operation of the cyclotron operation are radiation monitoring aspects. This is needed as radio-isotopes that the cyclotron can produce are key to diagnosing and treating many health conditions, such as a variety of cancers. The new PET and SPECT instruments at ANSL can be used effectively to improve health outcomes once the cyclotron is producing isotopes for medicine.  The ANSL in Armenia has been recognised as the strongest scientific institution in the country and they are able to grant both Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees at the graduate level.  The expertise in low energy nuclear science is completely missing in Armenia.  All of the reasons why a robust education and training programme in nuclear science are crucial for the well-being and advancement of Armenia.  This proposal aims to address the nuclear science training needs in Armenia. The Universities of Birmingham and Surrey have an established history of low-energy nuclear physics teaching and research. Additionally, since the 1940s Birmingham has operated cyclotrons for both nuclear physics research and medical isotopes production. This expertise will be used to offer much needed training for Armenia in two stages. 1) Four-week training courses will be delivered by UK academics at ANSL for post-graduate students. This will take place in both 2019 and 2020. 2) The best five students as selected by ANSL and UK academics will travel to the UK for a month to undertake hands-on nuclear spectroscopy training both at the University of Surrey/National Physical Laboratory and at the Birmingham cyclotron.       "description_narrative":["Tuberculosis remains one of the leaders of mortality causes worldwide, despite the fact that the disease is successfully treatable. Post-Soviet countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia are on the list of high-priority countries for TB control. Exploring other existing networks around TB, we see that they tend to unite the key stakeholder groups among each other - researchers, the civil society or the policy makers with the researchers' network focusing more on medical research and social research around the TB epidemic being not well represented. The proposed unique multidisciplinary network of social scientists (economists, public health researchers, sociologists, epidemiologists, psychologists, criminologists, public communication experts), civil society activists and policy makers will become a platform for ongoing knowledge exchange not only within the groups of stakeholders but across enabling effective adoption of what works best in fighting TB epidemic. This exchange will enable the use of existing research to inform current development of policies and interventions, while establishing a policy-relevant research agenda for the future and reliable venues for dissemination of the results. The key stakeholders of the Network are civil society organizations (representing TB, HIV/AIDS patients, healthcare and public health professionals), policy makers and researchers. The aim of the network is to facilitate the generation of evidence to inform public health policies to reduce the tuberculosis (TB) burden in post-Soviet countries and promote ongoing knowledge exchange among all stakeholders. To achieve this aim, we plan to:  1. Create a platform for network members to promote their existing activities (country case studies, working papers, popular blogs) and collect reference metadata. 2. Hold policy dialogue and networking meetings once a year over 2 days attached to research training meetings for young scholars to allow for them to participate in policy dialogue. The meetings will provide space to share ideas and discuss policies, as well as to develop agenda for the region.  3. Build capacity for early career researchers via the Young Scholar Research Support programme, which is a novel feature of the proposed network.  4. Support TB-relevant research in the Network countries by addressing training needs of the network members and young scholars via webinars and training sessions at the meetings, running of the working paper series and developing methodology for scoping studies and reference metadata  We foresee the following outcomes of the Network existence:  1. Developed common TB-focused social research agenda for the region and bespoke agendas for the participating countries,  2. Better understanding of the context nationally, within the region and internationally;  3. Improved local research capacity and policy dialogue,  4. Established collaborations within and across countries (closing the circle of researchers, civil society activists and politicians within countries and enabling within and multi-disciplinary collaboration across countries),  5. Better understanding of available data for research and future data needs.  The proposed network is unique and we expect to leave a lasting legacy in the form (i) of established collaborations to lead to future grant applications; (ii) an established network to enable new collaborations in the future; (iii) changed local research culture striving for higher standards of research integrity and engagement of stakeholders throughout all the stages of research; (iv) changed culture of policy dialogue, which incorporates both research evidence and views of civil society activists representing patients and professionals; (v) enablement of future research through access to reference metadata and evidence from scoping studies.","The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) supports cutting-edge research to address challenges faced by developing countries.       "title_narrative":["Self-recovery housing for development: scaling up crisis preparedness and humanitarian shelter response"],
      "description_narrative":["Earthquakes, storms, floods, and conflict cause untold damage to infrastructure, services, agriculture and livelihoods. The destruction of housing is often most visible, and the most devastating to the families, with often hundreds of thousands of homes destroyed. Householders themselves are invariably the first to respond; they are never passive, and signs of shelter recovery are very apparent from the first days after a disaster. The majority - as many as 80 or 90% - receive little or no assistance from the international community and are the main drivers of their own recovery process. This process has been termed 'self-recovery'. Previous GCRF awards supported interdisciplinary teams led by ODI in collaboration with CARE International UK, BGS, UCL and Loughborough University. They developed the understanding of the self-recovery process and advanced the theoretical basis for humanitarian assistance to the process of supporting self-recovery in practice. In large part as a result of this work, self-recovery is now a strategic element of the humanitarian shelter sector discourse with many disaster responses purporting to support this inevitable process. In recognition of the value of a people-centred approach that moves away from the convention product-based modalities, the CARE Philippines post-cyclone self-recovery project won the 2018 World Habitat Award in acknowledgment of its self-recovery focus. Sixteen thousand houses were built, each one unique and reflecting the priorities and means of each family. https://www.world-habitat.org/world-habitat-awards/winners-and-finalists/post-haiyan-self-recovery-housing-programme/ The self-recovery approach that respects the primacy of agency and choice aligns well with current humanitarian and development concerns such as the 'humanitarian development nexus', the Grand Bargain's emphasis on localisation, participation and cash-based responses, the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction, the Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Shelter Cluster strategy. This is further explained in the Business Case. However, very little has been done to develop guidance for practice. With the exception of the protocol 'Informing Choice for Better Shelter' that delivers a guide for the development of technical educational material, there are no published tools nor guidelines that provide an implementation framework for self-recovery in shelter projects. This project addresses this gap. CARE International has over 70 country offices across the world, all of them in ODA eligible  countries. All of the proposed activities will take place two hazard prone countries where there is a CARE presence and/or an activated coordination system in the form of a country level shelter cluster. The potential regions to be selected include South Pacific islands, East Africa, Central America, Philippines and SE Asia the precise locations to be dependent on ongoing and new disaster responses. In all instances the research team will be working with the Global Shelter Cluster, country level clusters and/or CARE International country teams. These will all be ODA eligible countries. The protocol developed will be adapted to become a preparedness tool for the specific ODA eligible country context.
