The intensity and length of the dry seasons as\nwell as the timing and intensity of the rainy seasons\nare becoming more and more unpredictable.\nAlthough improvements in weather forecasting are\nbeing made, the situation in Uganda is that reliable\nand actionable weather and crop data are still often\nnot available and of varying quality, contributing\nto underperforming agricultural production and\nfood insecurity. Whilst in the coming years capacity\nbuilding to achieve a truly sustainable solution will\ncontinue, DFMS will provide Uganda’s decisionmakers\naccess to reliable and actionable information\nnow.\nDFMS is a suite of information products that enables\nits Users to take better-informed water, environmental,\nand agricultural management decisions and,\namongst others, mitigate the impacts of drought and\nfloods. Access to DFMS only requires an Internetconnected\ndevice. Information is provided as maps\nor in graphs and tables, and several analysis tools\nallow for bespoke data processing and visualisation.\nAlarms can be tailored to indicate when parameters\nexceed user-defined thresholds.\nCreating DFMS required the development of a\n(software) platform to process data and visualise\nthe resulting information; environmental data going\ninto the platform and algorithms for processing;\nand a computing infrastructure (servers) to host the\nplatform and provide the service. The DFMS Platform\nis built using Open Source software, including Open\nData Cube technology for storing and analysing\nEarth Observation data. It extensively uses (free)\nsatellite remote sensing data, but also takes in data\ngathered in situ. By making the platform scalable\nand replicable, DFMS can be extended to contain\nadditional Products or be rolled out in other countries\nin the region and beyond.","This project aims to provide accurate flood and drought predictions to farmers in Uganda so that they are able to use that information to adjust their farming and livestock activities, with the ultimate impact of reducing the losses they would otherwise suffer from flood and drought impacts. The system is enabled through use of data with improved quality, detail and frequency from the Sentinel 1, 2 and 3 satellites (to ensure low cost) combined with SMOS/SMAP and climate modelling/meteorological data."],

The United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been designed to tackle a number of development issues; UN SDG Target 8.7 directly challenges the international community to end MSHT for all by 2030. Meeting this SDG Target 8.7 is essential as MSHT associated activities act as a major barrier to meeting many of the other UN SDGs. This project aims to tackle the issue of MSHT by developing a stakeholder-informed data-driven Earth Observation (EO) approach to support anti-MSHT efforts in Uganda. As an UN Alliance 8.7 Pathfinder Country, the Uganda Government is committed to meeting SDG Target 8.7 and ending MSHT. However, there is a major data deficit in reliable prevalence and vulnerability mapping and estimation of MSHT and associated indicators, particularly within country. This data deficit limits our understanding of the complex issues surrounding MSHT and restricted present anti-MSHT activities and risk management in Uganda. This project's proposed space-based solution is the development of a Modern Antitraffickingslavery Support System (MASS). MASS comprises four principal processing nodes that require input from satellite EO data and each providing output products that will be either ingested into another node or be for the end-user to use for informed anti-MSHT decision-making and response. It has reached an unprecedented sensitivity of fg/ sample, reduced in size down to tabletop making it cheap and transportable, opening the way for rapid screening capabilities in developing countries. The project will identify and select appropriate analytical techniques and develop protocols to assess the authenticity, safety and quality of food in developing countries. Milk powder and vegetable oils will be used as exemplar commodities to establish methods and guidance for 'front-line' food adulteration screening. We will continue and deepen our existing collaboration with China, India, Malaysia, Morocco, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Uganda in the framework of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) coordinated research project \"Field-deployable analytical methods to assess the authenticity, safety and quality of food\". The samples of milk powder and vegetable oils will be collected from different geographical regions/ producers of these countries and sent to our Manchester laboratory for analysis. They will be screened for harmful antibiotics residues and traces of nitrogen reach compounds e.g. urea and biuret. Their fatty acids profiles will be determined and statistically analysed to reveal the origin and possible adulteration by mixing with other less expensive or refined products.     Together with the collaborators from developing countries, experts from IAEA and UN and industry we will analyse and disseminate the data obtained in the analytical campaign which will help in shaping the new policies in developing countries and the UK, improve food safety and quality, and may lead to commercialisation of technology developed under STFC support.       "description_narrative":["What is the problem we want to address?  Serious illness has major effects on both the patient and family. In low and middle income countries these can be physical (such as pain and their symptoms) psychological, social (with additional stressors on income, children's school fees, stigma) and spiritual. This can affect both the wellbeing of the patient and family and their ability to access and stay in care. Health systems must address more than just the disease- they must become more \"person centred\". Person-centred care means that the health system is organised to meet the needs of the individual in ways that respond to their preferences, values and beliefs, offering dignity and respect. Being person-centred is seen to be a way to ensure that care services are high quality. By improving the health system through the workforce (the health care staff) the information it holds (on the individual's needs and preferences) and the way things are delivered, we can make care more person-centred.  What will we do?  In this study, we want to do some of the important initial work to inform a larger study to improve person-centredness. We will use our partnership across the UK, Zimbabwe and Uganda to find out what best person-centred care looks like from the view of patients and families facing serious illness, and very importantly from those who would be responsible for delivering (health care professionals). We will use this new information to work with health care teams to develop a strategy that is acceptable to patients and staff that can be put into practice in these countries as examples of health systems strengthening. We will also look at the best way to measure person centredness, so that when we conduct a larger study we have an accurate way to knowing if we have achieved our goals.  What will be the outputs? The World Health Organisation has a strategy to improve person-centredness of care for all- this study will provide a practical way to deliver this from an African perspective. We will also deliver an adapted way to measure the experience of care from the patient & family perspective. Our proposed strategy will be led by the views of patients, families and health professionals- making it more likely to achieve success.
