      "description_narrative":["The RE-SAT project is delivering an energy analytics\nplatform to equip Small Islands Developing States\n(SIDS) with appropriate information, products and\nmodelling tools to support their transition from fossil\nfuel electricity generation to renewables. For SIDS, the\neconomic imperative is to mitigate the financial risk\nof over reliance on fossil fuels. The RE-SAT platform\nprovides advanced data analytics to help energy\nplanners and investors where to locate renewable\nenergy assets in order to optimise the amount\nof renewable energy generated, minimise their\nenvironmental impact and maximise the return on\ninvestment.\nSIDS have enormous potential to be energyindependent\ndue to their natural renewable energy\n(RE) resources. To date however, many SIDS have\ninsufficient in-situ environmental data and rely on\nincomplete records or limited time-series data to plan\ntheir RE strategy. This leads to overly conservative\nestimates of the available renewable potential and a\ngreater reliance on traditional (fossil fuel) generation\nmechanisms to meet demand.\nTo overcome this data gap and to support SIDS to\nimprove their strategic RE planning, RE-SAT is using\nearth observations and other sources of environmental\ndata to support decision-making regarding the\nfeasibility and location of RE systems. RE-SAT is offering\nSIDS a powerful software application that will:\n• Improve RE strategic planning though high\nresolution power estimates;\n• Support the siting of new RE assets, taking into\naccount environmental variables and historic\nweather patterns;\n• Save money on redundant infrastructure by sizing\nschemes more accurately;\n• Increase productivity through smarter working\nusing the online data repository to share relevant\nenergy documentation with key stakeholders; and\n• Increase the chance of investment in new\nrenewable energy infrastructure through more\naccurate energy projections.\nRE-SAT has already delivered a successful proof-ofconcept\nenergy-planning platform in collaboration\nwith the Government of Seychelles and is working with\nMauritius, St Lucia, Montserrat, Tonga, Vanuatu and\nPalau to scale-up the concept.","To  develop  a  proof-of-concept  demonstrator  of  reusable  and  extendable  analytics  tools  for planners and technical specialists developing options and strategies for SIDS that:\nAssist in quantifying weather related risks and opportunities for renewable energy.\nExploit existing EO, weather model and other environmental data sources.\nAllow the capture of methodologies, results and insights  from studies for a specific country to aid planning in other SIDS"],

      "description_narrative":["Small island nations located in the Pacific are exposed\nto the damaging effects of climate change. Such\nchanges in the climate system have direct effects on\nthe livelihoods, the economy, overall development\nand the very existence of many small island nations.\nUrgent action to build capacity for climate resilience is\ntherefore required.\nThe overall aim of CommonSensing is to use\nsatellite remote sensing applications to support three\nCommonwealth countries: Fiji, the Solomon Islands\nand Vanuatu achieve their goal of improved national\nresilience to climate change. The project’s main output\nis to provide evidence and data needed for these\nisland states to be able to apply to climate funding\nin collaboration with the Commonwealth Climate\nFinance Access hub with a much higher degree of\nsuccess than presently. This will allow these island\nstates to obtain the funding they need to protect\ncritical infrastructure and build resilience into their\neconomy to combat the growing effects of climate\nchange.\nCommonSensing will deliver impact in two main\nareas:\n• In terms of Earth Observation (EO) derived\nservices, CommonSensing will use EO data to\nprovide partners with access to vital information\nregarding disaster and climate risks to inform\nplanning, food security needs and impact on\nthe environment. This information will be readily\navailable to users through easily accessible\nservices.\n• In terms of sustainability and capacity\ndevelopment, partners aim to contribute to\nnational and regional technical capabilities to\ninform policy and secure funding for climate\nchange resilience programmes beyond the\nthree-year project.
